In January 2004, Ban Ki-moon was appointed to the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade for the Republic of Korea. Throughout his years of public service, Ki-moon has been highly involved in inter-Korean relations, serving as Chairman of the South-North Join Nuclear Control Commission, working to de-nuclearize the Korean Peninsula, and as a diplomat at the Six-Party Talks in China in 2005. During his distinguished career, Ki-moon has worked at the United Nations headquarters in New York, served two assignments to the Korean Embassy in the U.S., worked as National Security Advisor to the President of Korea, and served as Chef de Cabinet for the President of the UN General Assembly. For his service, Ki-moon was awarded the Order of Service Merit by the Republic of Korea and was honored by the Korea Society in New York for his contribution to improving United States-Korean relations.
