The Department of Public Administration offers a Master of Public Administration degree that provides professional education for persons pursuing a management career in government or non-profit organizations. The MPA degree at the University of North Texas is one of the oldest and most respected in the country. In 2004, U.S. News and World Report ranked the UNT MPA program as being the best in Texas and the Southwest in the field of city management/urban policy, and 10th nationally.
The degree emphasizes a combination of courses and practical experience that lead to an entry-level management position for students just beginning their professional career or job advancement for students who are already public managers. Approximately 44 percent of our graduates work for a city government, 33 percent work in other governments, and 23 percent work in private or non-profit organizations. Students may pursue general management or select courses in any of the following specializations: emergency management, financial management, local government management, nonprofit management, or personnel management. The mission of the Master of Public Administration program is to prepare leaders for public and nonprofit organizations through an innovative curriculum and dedicated teaching; creating and disseminating knowledge to the field of public administration through interdisciplinary research and professional development activities; and serving the profession and the community in order to promote democratic governance and enhance quality of life. |
