Admission to MPA/MPP Degree Programs
13 May 2008 in Admission to MPA/MPP Schools
This blog is dedicated to the discussion of the admission process for MPA/MPP programs and other related issues, which are of interest to potential international students and the staff of MPA/MPP degree programs. We invite and encourage the staff of the MPA/MPP schools, potential students and other interested parties to ask questions and comment on admission related issues that might range from “Getting into MPA Schools’, “Who Are the Best Candidates” to “Getting Financial Aid”.

From Edward Shighula on 24 September 2006, 23:15
I don't have any comment
From Edward Shighula on 1 October 2006, 23:00
The process registration should be short so that one applies can be sure of his/her application if has received a due response
From Frederick Griefer on 11 October 2006, 15:00
I believe that the admissions process should be short, since most people vying for the MPA are working full-time and are just taking graduate school to become qualified for a possible promotion.
The minimum Undergraduate GPA should be atleast a 2.75 and recommendation letters from a professor and job supervisor should be mandatory.
From Andrey Mandarenko on 22 October 2006, 13:00
I do believe that some MPA programs can provide responses to applicans much early. If you check with programs that you are interested, I think they can help you with early response. At least they could tell you if you have higher or lower chance of admission. As to the GPA, it varies from school to school. But I am sure there are some programs who would pay little attention to GPA if you have good GRE and TOEFL scores.

Is there a way to see previous featured alumni on this website? A couple of weeks ago there were some featured alumni who work at the UNDP whom I would like to contact. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I'd like to know how do Admission Commitees evaluate international applicants from a non-english speaking country. In particular, I'd like to know how do thy evaluate GRE results and one's professional experience.
Best,
From Andrey on 15 December 2006, 05:30
Some of you can find answers to your questions in the "About the Degrees" section of this web portal. Please go to the MPA/MPP degree section. But also you can write to individual MPA/MPP programs to ask them about their view or approach on specific issues you are interested through the "Find a School" section.

How could I find the best universities in the world that offer MPA/MPP and Master in International Relations?
I couldn´t find any ranking specialized in these fields (mainly in International Relations), as it happens with those ordinary ones related to MBAs and technology areas.
I´d like to compare MIR with MPA/MPP, for I don´t quite see any difference between them as to a professional career and field of study.
I´d be glad if you could help me out.
Many thanks.
From zekiyu on 24 January 2007, 22:45
I would like to comment the requirment criteria of taking TOEFL & GMAT.Some of International applicants from a non-english speaking country have no the opportunity to take the testing. Is it fair for evalation?
Thanks
From Maren Welch on 1 February 2007, 07:30
This is a response to Albert Phillip's inquiry on January 24. Seton Hall University, located in suburban New York City, is one of the only schools to offer a dual degree masters program in Diplomacy/International Relations and Public Administration. It's a really great mix of IR courses and practical skills from the MPA. Please let me know if you have any questions about it.
From Kristen V on 4 February 2007, 09:15
How can I find FULL MPA program rankings?
From J on 7 February 2007, 11:15
Kristen if there's a Fulbright Office in your country they have reference magazines/guides/books that mention some of the "best" public policy & administration schools. I checked the US News and World Report ath the Fulbright office in my city and the latest MPP/MPA ranking is from 2003 and doesn't provide much info.
In my experience it is best to browse the internet and the MPP/MPA schools and its programs/focuses.
Best,
From J on 21 February 2007, 10:00
Does Naspaa or this website offers any fellowship/scholarship/assistanship to international students admitted or seeking a MPP/MPA in the US?
Thanks.
From Albert Phillip on 22 February 2007, 07:45
This is a reponse to Maren Welch´s post helping me out with my inquiry.
Thank you very much, Maren!! I´ll ckeck it out!
Best wishes.

From Bayiye on 21 March 2007, 12:30
How can one work for the UN with an MPA ? I have checked the UN website and its like one must have a work experience of 7-15 years which puts some us out of the equation given this high level of work experience.
Please advise

From reader on 2 April 2007, 20:45
it would be really helpfull if this site could provied more info for international students. On the left there's a topic menu and none has any information. the site is helpful in finding differences/similarities about the mpp/mpa degrees, but the blog option should be more active. Also the announcements in the home. The site home news hasn't changed in the last four months...
From zeki on 3 April 2007, 00:15
what is the importance of comment we give you?
From Maren Welch on 3 April 2007, 09:45
Hello all --
Seton Hall University offers an M.P.A with four concentrations: nonprofit management, public service, arts administration, and health policy and management. There is also a dual degree with Public Administration and International Relations (M.A/M.P.A)
I would like to suggest that international students check out the program, but I do not believe that they make the funding aspect very easy.
Still, I encourage you to check out the M.P.A program on the listed website and feel free to email me if you have any questions.
From Andrey on 24 July 2007, 04:15
Dear Bayiye,
Yes, unfortunately nowdays many international organization require a lot of experience. But there are ways to bypass this. For this you have to choose MPA/MPP programs, who has professors with good working relationships with the UN/World Bank/IMF. Then they can be of great help in finding you a place in these organizations even though you don't have enough experience. Recomendations of known professors matter a lot. Therefore choose the programs with much higher focus on international issues and organizations.
HOpe this helps.
From Mehdi on 24 July 2007, 04:15
As to getting funding this is a challenging issue. You should try to secure research/teaching assistantships from your school. Many of them provide such assistance. But this is not easy at all, you would guess.
Try approaching big businesses in your country to see if they would be interested in funding your studies.
Teh first place to go would always be the US embassy in your country to check available scholarship programs of course.

Jaime, there is no an easy answer to your question. probably the best choice for you would be doing dual degree both in MPA/MBA/ There are such MPA schools which provide such dual degrees. I know that UMASS Amherst have it. www.masspolicy.org
There a lot of them. Just check the database of this web site.
From mehdi on 20 November 2007, 21:30

Our son got admitted to Harvard Kennedy School of Government to do graduate studies in Public Policy. The cost is prohibitive there compared to Duke University(Durham, NC),University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI), Columbia University (New York, NY) and University of Wisconsin (Madison. WI) where also he has been admitted.
I am wondering if any former KSG alumni would advice us on the advantages of attending Harvard KSG and how to go about getting some financial aid. Other schools are giving aid up to $10k but not KSG. He worked in Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer and later in a non-profit organization. He is concerned about the financial burden (~$130k as loans) and his ability to pay it off with the kind of salaries people in the public service are expected to earn after graduation.
Any advice will be very much appreciated.
